If you suspect a leak, carefully (some meters have wires connected) raise the lid on your meter box to view the face of the meter.  If the meter is registering usage, (ie, any of the following conditions are observed:  the meter reading slowly increasing, a red triangle turning, or the word "forward" on the screen), without faucets being open in your house, you likely have a leak. Turn the valve off under each toilet, one at a time, and check the meter again after turning off each valve. When the meter stops indicating a leak, you have found the source of your leak. Toilet repairs are an easy do it yourself job with readily available parts from any hardware store.

Most unnoticed leaks come from very tiny leaks from toilet tanks, usually caused by a deteriorated rubber flapper, or the toilet valve.  If you suspect this, it is easy to test your toilet.  Add food coloring to your toilet tank and watch for the colored water to seep into the toilet bowl.  If you see colored water, you need to replace the rubber flapper and/or toilet valve.  It is inexpensive and easy to do.  It can also save a considerable amount of water.

A relatively new source of a "leak", is the incorrect installation of a water heater expansion tank.  The Plumbing Code requires the installation of a water heater expansion tank on any "closed" plumbing system.  A closed plumbing system is created when a check valve or backflow device are installed in a service line going to a house.  Placid Bay Estates service taps are "open", therefore not requiring a water heater expansion tank.  If your water bill seems high, ensure that a water heater expansion tank has not been installed on your home's plumbing system, without first making it a "closed system" by installing a check valve or a backflow prevention device.  Expansion tanks installed on an "open system" can cause what appears to be a persistent and continuous leak, costing you the homeowner, many dollars in excess water usage as water is repeatedly pushed back through the meter and re-registered.  This situation is particularly critical on the new electronic meters which are very efficient in the forward direction, but are much less efficient in the reverse flow direction.
